Volunteer Spotlight: Maria Shiung

“If I have spare time and I can do something to help my community, volunteering helps me feel that my life is more meaningful,” KSB volunteer Maria Shiung recently shared.

A Smyrna resident since 1985, Maria initially moved here for work and has kept roots in the city ever since. Toward the end of her career, she moved again for work, that time to Minnesota. Her son was always here, so when she retired in 2015, she came back to Smyrna for good.

Retirement has not only brought her back home, but it has also given her more time to do something she enjoys–giving back. “I like seeing people happy and making the community a better place,” she says.

In 2024, Maria took home KSB’s “Ready-for-Anything” volunteer award. No matter what role she signs up for, she always finds a way to step in and go the extra mile. Whether it’s Document Shredding, tabling at city festivals, or helping out at Bring One for the Chipper, Maria finds time to contribute to a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful Smyrna.
